What is SEO?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. It is a process webmasters use to get their websites ranking higher on search engines for certain keywords. It is not a happy accident why some websites are in the top 5 positions on the search engine results pages! A lot of work goes into getting them there.
Who Needs SEO?
Businesses who have websites will want people to be able to find their sites! Without SEO, websites will take a very long time to reach anywhere near the first page of search results – in fact, they could languish past page 10 for years! If you have a website which you want people to find, you need to use SEO strategies to get your site ranking for your keywords. Let’s say you have a car mechanic business website, but you are finding nobody knows about you. You website should be ranking for keywords to do with car repair – “car mechanic in ‘town'” or “local car repairs” would be good ones!
How Does SEO Work?
There are a number of factors which search engines take into consideration when ranking sites:
- domain strength
- link profile – it is better to focus on fewer high quality links rather than lots of poor quality links
- content – google is especially keen on sites which have high levels of good quality content, rather than spammy looking adverts
- onsite optimisation – title tags, page descriptions and headings all make a difference
How Much Does SEO Cost?
This is a common question, but it very much depends on the current state of the website. If there is a huge amount of work to be done, for instance, to get a site out of a penalty, it will likely cost more. If the industry is a highly competitive industry, again it will be more expensive. Some companies spend around £200 per month, others around £3000!
